CHAPTER SEVEN

BEN FELT A surge of anticipation as he guided the buckboard into the twilit ranch yard. The buildings were dark, and no one was there to welcome him home, but for the first time since he could remember, he didn’t mind one bit. Tonight Molly was with him, his wife Molly, the mother of his child. He was no longer alone.

Molly would share his life, and she would share his bed. His body tightened at the thought of having her softness beside him every hour of every night, her sweet mouth, her satiny skin, her lush breasts, and the blessed haven of her womanhood. All of her belonged to him.

He shifted on the seat and resisted the urge to whip the horses into a run. They’d be there soon enough, he told himself, and they had the whole night ahead of them—the rest of their lives ahead of them, in fact. Would a lifetime be long enough to get his fill of Molly Wade? To learn all the secrets her woman’s body held? To sate the desire raging within him?

He checked the horizon where the edge of the sun still lingered. How long until he could suggest going to bed? And how would he wait until then?

Molly felt a surge of apprehension as they approached the ranch buildings. Now her life as Ben’s wife would really begin. Soon, much sooner than she would have wished, it would be time to go to bed. The strange ache between her thighs frightened her. What did it mean? And how could she possibly feel desire when she was scared enough to curl up into a ball?

Frantically, she tried to recall the details of the night she and Ben had made love hidden in the trees behind the school house, but her memories were only images and sensations at once vivid and vague. She’d known acute, mind-numbing pleasure, but the agonizing pain of wounded pride blurred the edges of her recollections.

Tonight would be different, though. Tonight she was Ben’s wife. He’d risked death to take her from her father’s house. Surely he wanted her. Surely he cared for her.

She sensed the tension in him when he stopped the wagon just outside the barn. He barely glanced at her as he jumped down and came around to help her. His hands grasped her waist, but he released her the instant her feet touched the ground, and he would not meet her eye.

“I’ll put the buckboard away and take care of the horses. Why don’t you go on in the house? Here, you can unpack your things.” He handed her the package from the back of the wagon.

It felt awkward in her hands, the weight of the flatiron shifting beneath the layers of fabric. Reluctantly, she moved away as he led the horses into the barn.

The house was dark and uninviting, but she quickly lit a lamp. In its golden glow, she set her new bundle on the bed beside the one she had carried in earlier that day.
